Graduates 2024. Aminath Izuvath Ismail: “My journey into the world of medicine began in Belarus”
I am Aminath Izuvath Ismail, a final year medical student from Maldives.
It seems surreal that I'm here. The past years in Belarus have been some of the most challenging and life-changing years of my life, but I'll always be grateful for my classmates who became friends and best friends, my lecturers who taught us their knowledge and prepared us for the future, and my Dean and Vice Deans who have been pillars of support.
When I first arrived in Belarus, I was filled with excitement, ambition, and a drive to explore this new chapter of my life, my medical school journey. A journey that was also filled with a hint of homesickness. Craving my mother’s home cooked meals, quality time with family, and of course, the carefree fun times with my friends. But, despite the language barrier, the people here have been incredibly helpful in helping me settle in.
As I look back on my time here, I am reminded of the countless hours spent studying, researching, doing clinical cycles, and gaining knowledge. Although this is medical school, it hasn’t entirely been an academic journey. As much as I have grown academically, I have also grown both socially and personally.
I am grateful for my family and friends who have supported and cheered for me during my time here, by wishing me the best for my exams, for never doubting me, and for always believing in me.
To the junior students, take advantage of the exposure and knowledge that you gain in the upcoming years. Interact with your professors, ask questions, and seek out mentors who can provide you with guidance. Although this is medical school, don’t forget to enjoy and make memories with your friends.
I will miss the beautiful sceneries of this country, the peaceful atmosphere, the university, and its people, and most importantly the friends I’ve made along the way.
