Honours Board Students on their goals, dreams, and accomplishments: Samarasinghe Arachchilage Champa Tharangani Samarasinghe
I am Samarasinghe Arachchilage Champa Tharangani Samarasinghe, a student from group 6a, 6th course of Faculty of Foreign Students of Grodno State Medical University. As an island girl from Sri Lanka, I always dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, life took unexpected turns that led me here to Belarus. Thanks to my parents' unwavering belief in me, they helped pave the way for my acceptance into Grodno State Medical University, one of the finest medical institutions in Belarus. This opportunity was both a gift and a challenge, marking my first time stepping out of my comfort zone and venturing abroad.
Adjusting to life in Belarus came with its own challenges, particularly the language barrier. I quickly realized that learning Russian was essential, not only for academic success but also for connecting socially. My curiosity and determination led me to embrace Russian language classes with enthusiasm, and I found joy in engaging with my classmates in activities like poem recitations, singing Russian songs, and participating in language olympiads. These experiences not only helped me feel connected to the culture but also made me appreciate the beauty of the Russian language.
Studying medicine has been both exhausting and rewarding. The early stages were filled with ups and downs, but the dedicated support from my teachers was instrumental. They guided me through the rigorous coursework and encouraged me to push my limits and test my potential. I found myself setting higher goals, aiming to excel in each subject, and participating in various olympiads to enhance my understanding. One lesson I learned early on was the importance of listening attentively to my teachers. Their insights, drawn from years of experience as doctors, became invaluable when exams were near. Over time, I also recognized the importance of every subject and committed to giving each the attention it deserved.
Beyond academics, the support provided by the university's administration helped immensely in adapting to Belarusian culture, rules, and social norms. My decision to live in Hostel No. 2 proved to be one of the best choices I made, as the hostel administration created an environment that felt like a safe haven—a place where I could feel at home despite being miles away from my family.
There were times when the workload felt overwhelming, and I felt exhausted. But conversations with my peers helped me realize that I was not alone; everyone faced the same challenges. Sharing our struggles brought us closer and reminded us that perseverance is part of the journey to becoming the best versions of ourselves. I believe that growth is not only about academic success but also about finding balance and cherishing moments of joy. I made sure to spend quality time with friends and loved ones, whether baking a cake with my roommate, taking walks in nature, doing photoshoots, going to the gym, or simply exploring the city. These memories have become treasured parts of my experience in Belarus, and I know I will miss these moments deeply as I approach graduation.
As I stand only a few months away from completing this journey, I realize that Belarus has indeed become my second home. My time at Grodno State Medical University has shaped me profoundly, both as a student and as an individual. The faculty's unwavering guidance and encouragement have fueled my desire to become the best doctor I can be, and I am endlessly grateful for every lesson and every challenge I encountered along the way.
In my heart, I carry the hope to become the best version of myself, not by comparing myself to others, but by embracing my own journey and the values I have gained. Looking toward the future, I am eager to take the knowledge, resilience, and cultural insights I have gained in Belarus back to Sri Lanka, honoring the support and education that brought me to where I am today. With gratitude for every experience and a deep commitment to make a difference, I am ready to bring my skills and passion for medicine back to my homeland. My goal is to make a meaningful impact in healthcare, not only by treating patients but also by uplifting communities and contributing to the betterment of society. This journey has taught me that true growth often happens outside our comfort zones, in places that push us to adapt, understand, and grow in ways we never imagined.
