Honours Board Students on their goals, dreams, and accomplishments: Tahani Lenagala

My ambition, since the day I can remember, has always been ‘to help people’, and medicine was the stream that I picked. Every day I get to achieve my goal of helping, while also finding answers to the ‘how’s and ‘why’s we have about ourselves. We are continuously figuring out the mysteries of life and getting a step-by-step guide on what makes us human.

In my opinion, I am where I am right now because of the support that I have constantly been given by those around me. The moral values and perseverance my parents taught me; the discipline and versatility I developed through my time at school; the understanding about my own potential and the knowledge I received from my peers at GrSMU; and the love, encouragement and strength given to me by my friends, are what make me who I am today.

I believe that the most valuable thing that any individual can obtain is the “human connection”; and in order to do that, the most important and vital step is actually putting yourself in positions where you can create those connections. Go out into the world and build your story.

A key lesson that I have learnt is the importance of approaching a situation with an open mind. We all come from different walks of life and knowing this allows us to learn more about the world and about ourselves.

It is important to remember that we are not all the same and that is not a bad thing.

We should always care about those around us, be willing to help others in need, and always try to look at things from another perspective as well.

I strongly believe that there is much more to life than academics. While studies are important, the character one builds from various experiences outside the academic world, should not be ignored. I have always strived to balance my studies along with my extra-curriculars, as my achievements in life will show.

“Knowledge comes from learning. Wisdom comes from living”.
