The Department of Psychiatry and Narcology of Grodno State Medical Institute was established in November, 1962.
The first academic staff of the Department was the following: Head of the Department-doctor of medical Sciences, Professor Vladimir Iosifovich Akkerman, a graduate of the medical faculty of Paris University, who was the founder of the Department, associate Professor Gennady Alekseevich Obukhov, assistant lecturer Alexey Fedorovich Skugarevsky.
The Department name was changed in different years: 1962-2002 - Department of Psychiatry, 2002-2009 - Department of Psychiatry with a course of General Psychology, from 2009 to the present time – Department of Psychiatry and Narcology.
With the establishment of Grodno State Medical Institute the Department of Psychiatry was founded for teaching of the discipline "Psychiatry" in 1962. The first clinical basis of the Department was RPH "Boyary" in Grodno region. Four years later, the Department moved to the Grodno regional clinical psychiatric hospital, located in the building of a medieval woman convent in the city center. Since 2002, the Department of Psychiatry and Narcology is located on the basis of the Grodno regional clinical center "Psychiatry-Narcology". 5 Candidates’ and 2 Doctoral theses have been defended. 4 patents have been received. 4 manuals, 7 application instruction, 1 patent for invention and more than 350 research papers have been published by the academic staff of the Department. 27 conferences were held among them 3 with international participation.
